WHO You Will See: The People of Marrakech One of the highlights of our trip was the kindness of the locals. We stayed at Al Fassia Aguedal, where the staff made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. When we explored the city, we traveled mostly by taxi, and each driver asked about our experience in Marrakech, sharing tips on where to eat and what to see. While wandering through the Medina and souks, shopkeepers greeted us with curiosity, eager to learn where we were from and tell us about their goods. One young man studying to become an herbalist, guided us to his shop and shared the fascinating history of the city. We ended up buying Moroccan tea and coffee from him, learning a little more about the culture in the process. WHAT to Explore: Bahia Palace, Jardin Majorelle, and Atlas Mountains Marrakech is full of stunning attractions. On our first day, we visited Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of Moroccan design. I've always been attracted to geometric patterns and Moroccan tiles. The opulence of the palace was incredible, and every room seemed to tell a different story. The next day, we explored the Jardin Majorelle, a vibrant garden once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. The contrasting blue walls and natural beauty of the garden were a refreshing change from the architectural precision we’d seen at the palace. For a change of pace, the next day we took a trip outside the city to hike the Atlas Mountains. The journey was peaceful, filled with small waterfalls and picturesque views. We learned about the Berber people and had a chance to sample local products like argan oil, which Morocco is famous for. To top it off, we enjoyed a short camel ride through the desert before returning to the city. WHEN to Visit: February We chose to visit Marrakech in February for a few reasons. It was my first year in a job outside of teaching, so I had the flexibility to actually travel during the winter months. Plus, I was ready to escape the brutal February cold! Marrakech had beautiful weather around 70 degrees all week. The timing worked out perfectly—I was able to complete a few major projects before leaving and came back just in time to prepare for the annual Rockford Area Arts Awards. WHERE to Eat: Comptoir Darna On our first night in Marrakech, the hotel staff recommended Comptoir Darna, a vibrant restaurant in the city. We didn’t have a reservation, but they graciously seated us in a beautiful outdoor area. I ordered a chicken tagine, while my partner tried the kefta mkaouar—meatballs in a flavorful sauce. We overheard customers talking about live entertainment, and learned that we could reserve a table to see a show. On our last night in Marrakech, we returned for another delicious meal and to enjoy a gnaoua music performance with belly dancers. That was the perfect way to end our trip! WHY Morocco: A Truly Unique Experience Marrakech was a nice departure from the places we’ve visited before. From the intricate tile work and traditional architecture to the colorful textiles and street art, there was so much to appreciate as someone who loves art. The experience of immersing myself in a new culture, tasting new foods, and learning about a place so different from my own was incredible. If you’re looking for a travel destination that’s truly unique, I highly recommend a trip to Marrakech, Morocco! What do you think about Moroccan design?
