A few weeks ago I visited The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois. I was really impressed with the museum's collection. The works of art were displayed in brightly colored rooms with great quotes and information on the walls. Unfortunately I have very limited knowledge of Mexican art, so this was a great experience for me to discover artists to research further.
Below are a few photographs I took of my favorite works on display. I also made sure to get the names of the artists so I would be able to look them up later and discover more of their work. I hope to incorporate some of these artists in future lesson plans: Alejandro Romero, Josefina Aguilar Alcantara, Elnar and Jamex de la Torre, David Avalos, Cesar Augusto Martinez, Alejandro Garcia Nelo, Frank Ybarra, Carlos Cortez, and Pedro Meyer. I hope to be an example for my students, as someone who really values seeing art in galleries and museums. I want to encourage them to do the same, and not just to see "famous" artworks, but to discover art from contemporary artists, and artworks of various cultures.

I often take for granted that I live so close to one of the nation's biggest cities, Chicago, Illinois. Along with great food, sporting events and entertainment, Chicago offers one of the greatest art museums on the planet. Many of my favorite artists (Chagall, Cezanne, Rauschenberg, Hockney, Marc and more) have artwork on display at the Art Institute of Chicago.
I recently visited the museum and spent much of the day viewing work in the Modern Wing. I'm currently in a modern art history course at Illinois State University. Many of the paintings I saw were fresh in my mind from class. Having studied the context of many of these works added to my overall experience at the Art Institute. I took several photographs to share with my future students. I want them to be aware of my passion for art and seeing art in person in various museums and galleries. I also hope to encourage them to learn more about the artists and artworks they enjoy. Below are a few images from my visit: |
