Crazy Complementary Characters

Fifth grade students were introduced to the artwork of Isralei mixed-media artist, Hanoch Piven. The class discussed how he used found objects to create caricature assemblages of historical figures and celebrities.
The class identified a variety of shapes and colors used in Piven's artwork. We reviewed the terms symmetrical and asymmetrical balance in reference to the human face. Students identified pairs of complementary colors on the color wheel.
Students worked collaboratively to create several portraits similar to Piven by using found objects of complementary color pairs. Each portrait was photographed to record the students' artwork.
The class debated whether assemblages could be valued as art in comparison to traditional portrait paintings.
