Mix & Match Faces
David Shillinglaw paints, draws and makes things from whatever he can find. His artwork shifts between small drawings on paper, large wall murals and all manners of things in between. He is driven to make art out of a burning desire to express his love and fear of the human condition.
This elementary art lesson is inspired by Shillinglaw’s collaboration with pop artist, Sir Peter Blake. Students will identify David Shillinglaw’s visual vocabulary of repeated shapes, symbols and patterns. They will discuss Shillinglaw’s use of a limited color palette. Each student will develop their own visual vocabulary of features for the mind, eyes, and mouth of an abstract face. To complete their artwork, students will choose their own limited color palette to unify the finished painting.
